Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the active ingredient in sunless tanning products, is a non-toxic sugar approved by the FDA that is mixed with an external bronzer formulated to enhance skin tone. This bronzer becomes visible as soon as the solution is sprayed on the skin. DHA reacts with the amino acids in dead skin cells which in turn combine with proteins in the skin cells to create a pigment called melanoidin. The degree of darkness achieved depends on the concentration of DHA in the tanning solution. The more DHA in the solution, the darker the tan will be.
