This web site is designed to help navigate you through the process of selecting and purchasing a
tanning bed. Whether it is for home or business use.

There are two basic styles of tanning beds. The most common tanning bed is shaped like a clamshell or capsule. The bottom of the bed is composed of a sheet of Plexiglas, upon which the tanning salon client lies. Below the Plexiglas are bulbs which emit UVA or UVB light, or both. The second style is not a bed at all, but rather a booth or vertical chamber that is often called a “stand up.”

Older tanning beds use both UVA and UVB light bulbs that give off the same kind of light as the sun. Newer tanning beds use bulbs that give off more UVA and less or no UVB rays, as research over the last ten years has shown that UVB rays can be harmful. Prolonged exposure to UBB rays, as in sunbathing or tanning, can cause cancer and damage to the immune system as well as sunburn. UVA rays can penetrate the skin’s deeper layers without significantly damaging the top layer.

Overall, using a tanning bed is thought to be safer than sunning yourself for extended periods outdoors where you will be exposed to more UVB. You can control the amount and type of ultraviolet light you will expose your body to. This isn’t possible outdoors. The weather, the time of day, the altitude, and the season will all affect how much and what type of ultraviolet light you will receive.

Although most people think of tanning beds as only used for getting a glamorous tan, some people use tanning beds for medical reasons. Since the bulbs emit the same light as the sun, they stimulate the body to produce vitamin D. Tanning bed sessions are especially good for people with psoriasis and osteoporosis. They may be used to help treat certain types of depression, especially depression caused by a lack of sunlight in winter.
